Profile:
Dr. Akins has served as a senior manager and consultant to physician group practices and healthcare systems in Georgia. His consulting firm, Blue View Systems in Tucker, Georgia, specializes in helping physicians and health care systems achieve higher learning and performance with the application of simulation modeling, systems thinking, and internet tools. His primary research interest is the application of systems simulation modeling to improve the performance of health care systems by the design of information technology strategies.

Dr. Akins has served as Director of Strategic Planning for WellStar Health Systems, Marietta, Georgia; Senior Manager for Medaphis Physicians Services Corporation (Now Per-Se Technologies, Inc.); Atlanta Branch Manager for Klemm Analysis Group under contract with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: and Medical Group Manager for the Gynecologic Oncology Group, Georgia Baptist (now Atlanta) Medical Center, Atlanta, Georgia. His most recent projects include: financial modeling of future capital investment scenarios for imaging centers; modeling physician productivity and benchmarking for a faculty practice plan; forecasting healthcare services demand for a large integrated delivery system; and a national survey of HMO pharmacy directors on drug cost management strategies.

In addition to serving as Assistant Professor at the Institute of Health Administration, he has served as adjunct faculty in the Masters Program for Healthcare Policy and Administration, Stetson School of Business, Mercer University-Atlanta. He is a member of several professional organizations including the Medical Group Management Association and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
